MP visits PAWS at Loughborough University
Posted on 18/09/2008

Recently Loughborough MP Andy Reed visited Partners for Water and Sanitation (PAWS) at the Water, Engineering and Development Centre at Loughborough University.
PAWS is a tri-sector partnership organisation which draws skills and expertise from the British water sector to help build capacity in Africa. PAWS is currently working in Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa. Examples of support offered include training on leakage detection for small towns in Ethiopia, rehabilitation of water supply schemes in Nigeria and business planning for water demand management in South Africa. Andy is involved in the All Party Group for Ethiopia and has recently been working on water and sanitation issues with Tearfund so there were many areas of commonality.
Discussions centred around raising awareness of the importance of capacity building in water and sanitation in developing countries. Andy stressed his interest and commitment to the work of PAWS and offered to put forward a topic for an adjournment debate with other NGOs working on the issue. PAWS looks forward to continued engagement with Andy as a way to continue to contribute towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal for Water and Sanitation.
The Loughborough MP said:
"I was delighted to be able to go along to PAWS, to see the good work they are doing in promoting water and sanitation issue in developing countries. PAWS bring expertise from the UK and pass it on to people who need it. It is a great way to partner with developing countries.
"This work is helping developing countries learn the skills and expertise they need, so that they do not just have to rely on aid. I fully support such projects and hope to work closely with PAWS in the future in promoting water and sanitation issues.
