Charnwood 2026
Posted on 19/09/2008
A VISION for the future of Charnwood up to 2026 is to be discussed by the Borough Councils Cabinet.
Planning officers have prepared the draft core strategy, known as Charnwood 2026, which aims to provide a framework for public consultation before final decisions are made about additional homes, employment sites and essential supporting infrastructure.
Cabinet members will discuss the report on Thursday, September 25th but have stressed that residents will be given the chance to have their say before a final decision is made.
The Government, through the draft Regional Plan for the East Midlands, requires the Borough Council to provide for almost 10,000 new homes by 2026, in addition to those already planned.
About half of this growth is due to changes in the existing population as more people are living independently into old age than previously, and others prefer to live alone or in small family groups.
It is these factors, plus people moving into the area, that drive up the need for more homes.
There will also be a need to provide for new jobs, including the development of a second Science Park at Loughborough, along with shops, schools, transport facilities and green spaces for leisure and recreation - all the essentials for delivering a high quality of life for both new and established communities.
Councillor Hilary Fryer (Conservative councillor for Barrow & Sileby West), Charnwoods Cabinet Member for Planning, said: "The task ahead of us to deliver genuinely sustainable new communities is a major challenge but we want to engage stakeholders and residents to ensure that the choices that we make today are the best for the needs of tomorrow.
The Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Cllr Richard Shepherd (Conservative councillor for Quorn & Mountsorrel Castle), added: "I would like to assure everyone that whatever the Cabinet decides on 25th September is not the end of the matter.
"We shall be choosing preferred options. Our choice will be based on all the information currently available. Officers have had the opportunity to do more extensive research than they had at the time of the 2006 consultation.
The emerging strategy will be tested through the consultation exercise and to assist in that debate all of the alternative options which have been considered are included for public comment.
The formal consultation on Charnwood 2026 will begin on Friday, October 24th and go on until Friday, December 5th.
Documents will be available for inspection on the Councils website " www.charnwood.gov.uk - and copies will be placed in local libraries.
There will be a series of meetings and presentations across the length and breadth of the Borough, details of which will be set out in a post card which will be sent to every household and advertised in the local media.
Presentations will also be made at all Area Forum meetings, details of which also are advertised in the press and on the Councils website.
