Racial abuse in Loughborough

Posted on 24/06/2008

Loughborough Police are trying to trace a lorry driver in connection with an alleged racist abuse incident in Loughborough.

The incident happened close to the bus stop on High Street, Loughborough just after 11am on June 19.

A lorry driver came to a stop in traffic on the opposite side of the road, shouted a racist comment and made an offensive gesture before driving off in the direction of Leicester.

The victim believes that the, mainly blue lorry, had the words ‘dry wall installation' on the side and a partially seen registration of FX06.

PC 2054 Tam Bains-Singh, North Area Hate crime officer said: "Racial abuse is unacceptable. Everyone has the right to feel safe wherever they are or wherever they live.

"I would like to hear from anyone who saw this incident. Perhaps you were in the area of the High Street at the time or shopping locally and witnessed something which may prove crucial to the investigation.  Any information no matter how insignificant may help with our enquiries.

"I know that many incidents of hate crime go unreported because people think their complaint won't be taken seriously but I can assure people that the Force is committed to fighting hate crime and takes complaints of this nature very seriously."

"If someone uses racially abusive words to you or displays any racially offensive writing that causes you harassment, alarm or distress, they may be committing an offence.  People who commit hate crime can be arrested and prosecuted in the courts. They can also be evicted, fined or given Anti-Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs).

Anyone with information is asked to call PC 2054 Tam Bains-Singh on (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 2054.

Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111. Please note that some mobile phone networks may charge for this call.
