Serious fatal RTC on A607 near Melton Mowbray

The A607 near Melton Mowbray is closed in both directions following a serious road traffic collision in which six people have died.

The police were called to the scene of the collision about a mile south of the town centre at 1.54am on Thursday 10th July 2008. The collision involved a car and a lorry. The lorry driver, a 48 year old man from Melton Mowbray has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Six people travelling in the car, a black Ford Mondeo, have died, they are all believed to be young. The car is thought to have been travelling along the A607 towards Leicester.

The road has been closed while an investigation into the cause of the collision is carried out and the vehicles are recovered. The A607 is expected to be closed for most of today. Diversions are in operation but motorists travelling in and around the town should expect delays.
