A607 reopens after six die in road collision

The A607 near Melton has been reopened following a fatal road collision in which six people died.

The incident happened at 1.54am today (Thursday July 10) on the A607 about a mile south of Melton town centre. It involved a black Ford Mondeo and a lorry.

The A607 was closed while an investigation into the cause of the collision was carried out and the vehicles were recovered. The road was re-opened at 6.40pm.

The driver of the car, a 23-year-old man, died in the collision along with a 19-year-old man, an 18-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman, an 18-year-old woman and a 19-year-old woman. They are all believed to be from the Leicestershire area. They have not yet been formally identified.

A 48-year man who was arrested in connection with the incident has been released with no further action.

Sgt Simon Adkin from Leicestershire Constabulary's Road Policing Unit said: "The black Mondeo was travelling towards Leicester and the lorry was travelling in the opposite direction. We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident and saw either of these vehicles beforehand to get in touch."
