Chairman presents sports grants to young athletes
Posted on 04/11/08
Photo Opportunity: The Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Tony Kershaw, will welcome a group of possible London 2012 athletes to receive sports grants from the County Council. The presentation is taking place on Tuesday 4th November at 6.30 pm at County Hall.
The Talented Athlete Fund, supported by Leicestershire County Council and managed by Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport, is awarded to local athletes who are in full-time education and who are competing at a high level within their sport.
The impressive array of young people who are receiving awards cover sports such as, sailing, badminton, swimming, windsurfing, cricket, gymnastics, table tennis, ice-skating, cycling, basketball and race walking. Many of the athletes are already competing at national level and are training hard to ensure they have the best possible chance of having the opportunity to represent their country at international events and hopefully at the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
Tony Kershaw, Chairman of the County Council, said:
It is very pleasing to be able to support local athletes and a pleasure to meet them and to learn more about their particular sports and achievements we all wish them well in the future and hope to read about and see more of them as we get closer to the London 2012 Olympics.
