Loughborough in Bloom blossoming

Posted on 04/11/2008

An ambitious project to enter Loughborough into East Midlands in Bloom is gathering momentum.

Leicestershire County Council, Charnwood Borough Council and the Loughborough Echo have come together to lead the exciting initiative.

Whatever the judges opinion, all partners are determined that this will deliver real benefits for the town.

Loughborough in Bloom offers the local community the chance to support improvements including floral displays, landscaping, shrub planting, conservation, recycling and reducing litter and graffiti.

A project board set up to coordinate the East Midlands in Bloom entry is meeting for the first time on 30 October 2008. Opportunities will be made available for individuals, community groups and local business to become involved in the project.

An important aspect will be the appearance of the town throughout the year.

With this aim in mind, Charnwood Borough Council’s Green Flag-winning Queen’s Park is already being refreshed for the winter and spring.  Planting is also being prepared at Beehive Lane, Southfield Road / Leicester Road, Forest Road, Lemyngton Street, Southfields Park and Loughborough Cemetery.

Leicestershire County Council spruced up the verges along Epinal Way last year and will carry out more planting next month along Nanpantan Road, around the junctions of Royland Road/Forest Road and several other locations in the town.

David Parsons, Leader of Leicestershire County Council, said: “This is a great opportunity to work together with the Loughborough Echo and Charnwood Borough Council to continue to boost the towns appearance and recognise what we have already achieved.

"Over the last 12 months, we have carried out extensive landscaping and planting in Loughborough and are keen to work further with partners and the community."

Cllr Peter Lewis, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure, said: “Co-operation by all concerned is the key to success.

“Our environment belongs to everyone. We should cultivate it, enhance it, share and rejoice in it.

“This is the true community politics and it is both challenging and exciting.”
