Distraction burglary in Thurmaston
Posted on 06/11/08

Police are appealing for witnesses after a distraction burglary in Charnwood Avenue, Thurmaston.
The incident happened at around 2.10pm on Tuesday, October 4 when the 86-year old victim answered her door to a man claiming to be from the water board.
The victim let the suspect in and he asked her to empty beneath her sink and turn the taps on. A few minutes later the suspect began to walk towards the front door. The victim then noticed two other men run down the stairs and out of the door.
Nothing was taken in the incident and no-one was injured.
The first suspect, who knocked on the door, is described as white, around 5'6" to 5'8" tall and of medium to large build. He had short fair hair combed back and a red mark on the left side of his face. He was wearing a white jumper, grey trousers and red and white gloves.
The second suspect is described as white, around 6' tall, had dark hair and was dressed all in black.
There is no description of the third suspect.
PC Chris Coe, who is investigating the incident said: "We are appealing for anyone who saw these men in the area at the time of the incident or remembers any suspicious activity around the Barton Lane area to urgently get in touch with us.
"We would also ask anyone who had a similar visit from someone claiming to be a water board to please get in touch and would remind residents to be vigilant when strangers knock on their doors, to check the ID of any workmen and don't be afraid to close doors on visitors while you verify their details.
"If they are genuine, they will not mind you checking their ID and most will be happy to make an appointment and return at a later date or time. If you do answer the door to a stranger always put the chain on first and if you are in any doubt dial 999 and contact the police."
Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 2858 Chris Coe on 0116 2222222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification numbers 2858. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
* Please note, some mobile networks may charge for this call.
