Dreaming of a Green Christmas!

Posted on 23/12/08

RESIDENTS are being encouraged to dream of a green Christmas by Charnwood Borough Council.

A number of festive tips are now available online to encourage people to take simple solutions to prevent Christmas rubbish ending up in landfill.

And the Council is also offering a perfect present idea for a green-fingered loved one " a subscription to the Brown Bin Garden Waste collection service.

Anyone signing up to the scheme between now and March 31st next year will get six months worth of collections free of charge.

At just 15 a year when paid by direct debit, the special 18 months for the price of 12 offer is a wonderful gift idea for any gardening enthusiast.

Details of how to sign up to the collection service are available by logging on to www.charnwood.gov.uk/pages/recycling " where you can also find out how to reduce your Christmas waste.

The helpful advice aims to give people practical ideas to help cut back on the tonnes of wrapping paper cards and even Christmas trees which will all become waste by the New Year.

Cllr Mike Preston (Conservative councillor for Queniborough), Charnwood Borough Councils Cabinet member for Environment, said: "Christmas is a wonderful time of year but it can also lead to an extreme amount of waste.

"By following our festive tips, you can reduce the amount of rubbish that is sent to landfill sites ensuring a green Christmas for everyone.

"And for those struggling to find a present with a difference, why not sign up to the brown bin Garden Waste Collection Service?

"It represents excellent value for money at only 15 for fortnightly collections over the next 18 months! It will also help reduce your carbon footprint as it means you wont need to make regular trips to the Waste Disposal sites to get rid of garden rubbish.

"Around a quarter of all Charnwood residents have signed up to the Garden Waste scheme and this special offer means it costs less than 40p per collection.

Meanwhile, there will only be a few changes to the refuse and recycling collection service over the Christmas holidays.

Only collections scheduled for Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and Friday, January 2 are being moved.

If collections were due to be picked up on December 25th, these will now be made on Saturday, December 27th " while Monday, December 29th will be the date for those residents whose waste should have been collected on December 26th.

Collections scheduled for January 1 will be put back 24 hours to Friday, January 2, while those due to happen on January 2 will now be collected on Monday, January 5.

Residents are being reminded that all waste needs to be put out by 7am on the day of collection " and between Monday, December 29th and Thursday, January 8, one extra tied bag of rubbish can be put out for collection at the side of wheelie bins.
