Challenge our students to Design in a Day

If you fancy putting some of the Universitys most innovative thinkers to the test, then this years Design and Technology degree show is the place to be.

Design in a Day is a brand new initiative being run for the first time this year, and will allow companies and individuals to set design challenges for Loughboroughs Design and Technology students.

We wanted to give visitors to this years degree show something a bit different, and so we decided that wed ask them to put us to the test, explains student Lydia Beaton. While people are wandering around the show theyll not only see our completed work but will also be able to watch us in action, working on the design briefs that weve been set that day.

The briefs can focus on absolutely anything, for instance products to improve safety in the home, or maybe sustainable packaging. We just want companies and individuals to get their thinking caps on and to come up with some exciting design challenges for us!

Design in a Day is believed to be the first event of its kind in the UK to be held during a degree show.

Paul Wormald, a senior lecturer in the Department of Design and Technology, says: Our students are used to working with companies on design briefs in fact many of the products that will be on display at the degree show have been devised from briefs set by well-known national companies. But we think this could be the first time students will have tasked themselves to come up with design concepts in such a short time frame, and in front of an audience too!

It will be a real test of their skill and creativity, but our students are among the very best in the UK and I know theyll rise to the challenge, adds Paul.

Design in a day will be held every day during the Design and Technology degree show, which runs from Friday 13 to Monday 16 June, in the Denis Rooke Building on the Holywell Park area of the campus.

There is no need to book in advance, just turn up with your design challenge.

Opening hours are: Friday 13 June 12 noon to 5pm; Saturday 14 to Monday 16 June 10am to 5pm.
