Up-and-coming artists work on display at degree show

Stunning sculptures, exquisite jewellery and beautiful illustrations are just some of the pieces that will be on display at this years Loughborough University School of Art and Design (LUSAD) Degree Show.

The exhibition, which takes place from Saturday 14 to Friday 20 June, is the showcase for the striking works of art that the students from LUSAD produce during their final year. Almost 300 students will display their portfolios, which show their work from conception to completion.

The show covers a wide range of artistic genres including furniture, painting, film, graphic design, animation and textiles.

One student, Alex Brady, who is studying Printed Textiles, took inspiration for her designs from mazes, labyrinths and game-play. Im fascinated by illusory environments and visual confusion, which Ive reflected in my designs, she says. Ive created digital- and hand-printed textile lengths, a cardboard rocking chair, which has been developed in conjunction with a local cardboard manufacturer, and a short animation of a marching band, which brings print to life!

The work of Fine Art student Luke Twigger focuses on the Swedish term Konsthantverk, meaning handmade arts in English. Ive blended aspects of kitsch culture, design and fashion to create handmade objects through which Ive tried to explore the boundaries between art, design and craft, explains Luke.

Marsha Meskimmon, the director of LUSAD, says the show caps another tremendous year for the Schools students. The degree show is a chance for everyone staff, students and members of the public to celebrate the students achievements and reflect on their success. And who knows you may just see the work of the next big name in art! she says.

The degree show is open 10am to 5pm from Saturday 14 to Friday 20 June. Exhibitions of Fine Art, 3D Design and Textile Design are being held in the School of Art and Design buildings on the University campus. The Visual Communication exhibition is located at 12 Frederick Street, in Loughborough town centre. Admission is free and advance booking is not required.

An exhibition of work by Art and Design Foundation students is also on display in the James France building, on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 June from 10am to 5pm.
