Pupils brighten up to stay safe
Posted on 29/12/2008

Primary school pupils in the Loughborough area will be brightening up this winter as part of a major road safety campaign.
More than 2,000 high-visibility vests have been donated to Leicestershire schools by technology company, 3M, which has its UK headquarters for health care at Loughborough.
The vests are being distributed by Leicestershire County Council’s road safety and travel awareness team.
It is the fourth consecutive year 3M have been working in partnership with the County Council on the campaign. Since it began in 2005, 3M has donated more than 100,000 high visibility vests to schools close to its UK sites.
The campaign is being launched for Road Safety Week (November 10-16), and is sponsored by 3M.
3M has developed a free online teaching resource for schools, which also contains sections for parents and children to use at home and has also just launched new online games for children to learn about road safety as they play.
Mr Tony Kershaw, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council said: “We would like to express our gratitude to 3M again, for their continued support of road safety at the schools in our County.
“The vests are a great way for children to stay bright and be seen. They help us to reinforce the message to parents to make sure their children wear light coloured coats and clothing in order to remain clearly visible.
“Pupils can also brighten up by adding reflective strips or accessories to bags and clothes a simple but effective way of being seen which could possibly be life saving.”
Among the schools set to receive vests is Oxley Primary School at Shepshed, where Head Teacher Lawrence Richards added: “At this time of year it’s always more difficult for motorists to see young pedestrians so it is vital that children remain visible at all times. These vests will be invaluable to us. Even though the nights are drawing in, we are continuing to encourage pupils to walk as part of the Travel Plan process.“
3M Communications Manager at Loughborough, Julie Owen commented: “Road accidents are the single biggest cause of accidental death among five to 14-year-olds in this country and everyone is concerned about that.
“We hope the combination of the providing the vests and encouraging the children to learn more about road safety will be a real help in reducing the number of casualties this winter.”
