New guide aims to widen your literary horizons

The latest edition of Who else writes like?, a guide designed to help lovers of fiction discover new authors, has been published by LISU at Loughborough University.

Now in its sixth edition, this established reference book and reading promotion tool points readers in the direction of other writers they might like to try, by recommending up to 12 alternatives for each of the more than 1,970 authors included in the guide who write in a similar style.

Who else writes like? is compiled by Roy and Jeanne Huse, who have over 50 years combined experience in libraries and who are advised by a panel of librarians from across the UK and in Australia. Based on the most popular writers in terms of UK public library loans, the latest edition covers almost 500 authors not in any of the previous volumes.

Three new features have also been introduced in this years guide. There is an index of pseudonyms; an indication of authors who write childrens books as well as for adults; and details of authors whose books may be suitable for teenagers making the crossover from junior to adult fiction. Information is still included in the guide on genre, well-known characters and series, authors websites and relevant literary prizes.

LISUs Director, Claire Creaser said: LISU is proud to be associated with the latest edition of this readers guide. The range of fiction available can present a bewildering choice for readers, and each new edition of Who else writes like? has included more authors than the last. Although some authors from previous editions are inevitably omitted to make space, the guide presents a comprehensive picture of who else writes like the most popular authors in the UK today.

In an age where it is easy for websites to make automatic recommendations based on customer purchases, it is good to see that a considered, expert, opinion is still valued. The combination of reader popularity and expert opinion make this guide invaluable for all who love reading, not just for librarians.

Priced at 23.99, Who else writes like? is available from LISU. For further information call 01509 635680 or email lisu@lboro.ac.uk
