New day centre proposed for Loughborough

Proposals for a new day centre for disabled people in Loughborough are to be considered by the county’s ruling Cabinet.

Leicestershire County Council is proposing to replace the current Charnwood Day Centre a worn-out cabin in the grounds of Burleigh Community College with a new venue in Loughborough town centre.

David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adult Social Care, said: “This review is all about delivering effective, flexible services, to help disabled people to remain as independent as possible.

“This is a win-win for service users the people who use Charnwood Day Centre will get a new centre and we will be able to fund other services for other disabled people, who do not want to attend a traditional centre.”

Earlier this year, the Council staged a review of day services for disabled people, aimed at developing more community-based options. It is now proposing to:

• Replace the current Charnwood Day Centre building with a new site in Loughborough town centre

• Change the day centre’s services from five days to three, releasing cash to fund other community-based activities for other disabled people

Of the centre’s 35 users, 33 would retain the same number of days when the new service opens. The remaining two, who attend for more than three days a week, would be offered a fourth day at other venues, such as at groups run by voluntary organisations.

Because of the state of the current cabin, the service may be temporarily relocated to Mountsorrel Day Centre, until a suitable site is found in Loughborough.

The Cabinet will discuss a report on the issue at 2.30pm on December 16.
