University set to mark Centenary

In 2009 Loughborough University will celebrate its Centenary one hundred years since the establishment of Loughborough Technical Institute, the University’s predecessor.

A host of celebratory events are planned throughout the year, including a lecture series which will see some of the eminent thinkers of our time reflect on the major issues of today. Among the speakers so far confirmed are environmentalist Sir Jonathan Porritt, mathematician Marcus du Sautoy and Dame Barbara Stocking, the director of Oxfam.

Over the summer months, from May to July, there will be an exhibition at Charnwood Museum of one hundred years of education and innovation at Loughborough, charting the history of the University and its predecessor colleges through to the present day.

There will also be a community open day on 14 June, being held in conjunction with the Students’ Union, at which local residents, staff and students will be able to take part in hands-on activities, experience the University’s state-of-the-art sports facilities, see art displays, and much more.

The Centenary celebrations will culminate in September with a Civic Reception, which will be held jointly with Loughborough College on the anniversary of the day the first students enrolled at the Technical College.

“We are all immensely proud of Loughborough’s long history of providing further and higher education, and of the achievements of both the University and its predecessor colleges over the years.

“We are looking forward to celebrating our illustrious past, our present successes and what we are sure will be an exciting future,” said Professor Shirley Pearce, the University’s Vice Chancellor.

Details of all the events and celebrations will be posted throughout the year at www.lboro.ac.uk/centenary
