Gorse Covert Community Centre

Posted on 28/01/09

Charnwood Borough Council is considering an offer of central government funding to the tune of 738,605 to refurbish Gorse Covert Community Centre in Loughborough at its Cabinet Meeting on 5 February.

When the works are complete the Council is proposing to grant the Gorse Covert Community Association a 40 year lease in the building at a peppercorn rent. This will secure the use of the building for the local community and provide the Association with long term stability

Cllr. John Bush (Conservative councillor for Wreake Villages), Charnwood Borough Councils Cabinet member for Finance and Resources, said: "This is all in line with the Councils objective of using the land and buildings it owns for community benefit. We are very pleased to have secured this funding under competitive bidding. Gorse Covert is the largest award in the East Midlands and one of the largest nationally. The project has been successful because it demonstrates strong partnership working between local authorities, the community and third sector organisations.

The refurbishment of Gorse Covert will give better access for people with disabilities as well as the community as a whole. It is proposed to use the funds to provide more space by creating an extra floor in the roof area. This will allow groups to have access and make better use of the building.
