Graffiti Exhibition in Loughborough

Posted on 11/02/2009

Charnwoods Community Safety Partnership rolled out an initiative last summer designed to provide an alternative means of expression to young people. A display of their fascinating pieces of work can be viewed at the Town Hall in Loughborough starting Monday 23 February.

A community graffiti artist was commissioned to work with young people, delivering workshops in 3 neighbourhoods where local communities raised concerns regarding levels of graffiti and low level criminal damage.

The workshops were designed to educate young people and encourage them to adopt a more acceptable means of expressing themselves.

Cllr. David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Councils Cabinet member for Community Safety, said: "As a result of the workshops, evidence held by the Charnwood Borough Council shows that there was a 50% reduction in reported incidents of graffiti and damage across the three locations compared to the same period last year.

A total of 37 young people attended the workshops and produced some interesting pieces of work, examples of which will be displayed to the public in the foyer of the Town Hall for a period of two weeks beginning on Monday 23 February.

Charnwoods Community Safety Partnership consists of Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire County Council, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue, Leicestershire Constabulary and Loughborough University as well as other partners working together to provide a safer community.
