Posted on 05/03/2009

Charnwood Borough Council has created a new Audit Committee to oversee its financial arrangements and has appointed an independent Chairman to lead it. The appointment was confirmed at the Council meeting on 2nd March 2009.

Following a recruitment drive, Mr Paul Blakemore was offered the position following acceptance by the full Council. Mr Blakemore has been a qualified Chartered Accountant since 1976 and a partner in practice since 1984.

He has also been a director of the Loughborough Building Society since 1980 and was Chairman of its audit committee for many years before becoming Chairman of the Board in 2002. Mr Blakemore has lived in the Borough since 1980 and for the last 24 years in Hoton.

Mr Paul Blakemore said: I am delighted to have been appointed as chair of the new Audit Committee. I look forward to working with the elected councillors on the Committee and the senior officers of the Council.

Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, Councillor Richard Shepherd (Conservative councillor for Quorn & Mountsorrel Castle), said I should like to welcome Mr. Blakemore to his new role. Having an independent Chairman of the Audit Committee is a further step towards providing assurance for the public about the Councils financial affairs.

Mr Blakemore will start his new role on 4th March with the first meeting of the new Audit Committee being three weeks later.
