Police in Loughborough urge people to report disability hate crime

The police in Loughborough are hoping to encourage delegates at a disability forum to report incidents of Hate Crime.

The Charnwood Disability Forum is meeting on Wednesday 11th March 2009 at John Storer House from 7pm to 9pm.  It is an umbrella organisation for all disability organisations in Charnwood and provides an opportunity to exchange information and a platform for comment, debate and action on access and other issues affecting disabled people.

This year, for the first time, the North Areas Hate Crime Officer, PC 1948 Chris Hayton, will be giving a presentation to delegates to let them know what a hate crime is and how they can report it.

PC Hayton said; "It is rare that disabled people report hate crimes to us and we suspect much of it goes unreported.  I want to tell delegates that no one should be a victim of crime because of their disability and no one should suffer in silence. We do take crimes of this nature seriously and will take positive action against people who commit them.

"I hope that by addressing the forum and talking about the work we do that I will give people the confidence to come forward and report incidents to us and Ill be encouraging delegates to take the message back to their members with details on how to contact me."
