Playing it safe in road safety quiz
Posted on 12/03/09
Highways, Transportation & Waste Management
Youngsters from 25 schools have taken part in the area finals of the Leicestershire Road Safety Quiz.
Over 9,000 children from local schools have taken part in the qualifying rounds which have been held around the county since last November.
Four primary school teams competed against each other in each area title and Fairfield School in Loughborough also held their own keenly contested inter-school quiz.
Run annually by the County Councils Road Safety and Travel Awareness Team, this years closely-fought area finals were held at neutral venues.
Each contestant was given an interactive control to answer the questions which were projected onto a large screen. Some rounds were borrowed from television game shows such as A Question of Sport and University Challenge, providing a hard-fought and tense contest.
Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Leader of the County Council said: Every child involved showed a good standard of road safety knowledge and should be very proud to have made it to the finals.
Teaching basic rules such as the Green Cross Code is hugely important in keeping our children safe and helping to reduce the number of lives lost on Leicestershires roads.
