New world record for Loughborough’s Joanne Jackson
Loughborough University swimmer Joanne Jackson broke the women’s 400m Freestyle world record last night as team mate David Davies set a British best in the same event at the British Gas Swimming Championships 2009. Olympic bronze medallist Jackson, who like Davies is coached by British Swimming’s Kevin Renshaw, was pushed all the way to her gold medal by double Olympic Champion Rebecca Adlington who trains at the University three times a week.
The women were swimming stroke for stroke throughout the race and it wasn’t until the final 100m when Jackson began to put some space between her and Adlington. The final 25m saw Jackson pull five metres ahead of Adlington and Jackson touched home to rapturous applause as she set a new world record with a time of 4:00.66. She also secured her place on the World Championship squad for Rome this summer.

She also secured her place on the World Championship squad for Rome this summer. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” said Jackson. “Becky normally gets me on the last 25m and this time I just thought to myself just kick and see what you can do. So I put my head down and fought for it. I was just in shock when I saw that time. “My dad is here today and I am really happy he got to see that. I am pleased with the World Championship place. Dave had got his just before me and I just didn’t want to let my coach Kev down. So I was happy to have secured my place.” Adlington took the silver medal, after also swimming under the old world record time, and finished in a time of 4:00.89. “It was just a fantastic race to be part of,” Adlington said. “For both of us to go under the world record is an amazing achievement. We pushed each other all the way but Jo got the better of me on this one but I am really happy for her.” Davies swam to an emphatic victory in the men’s 400m Freestyle with a new British record to also seal his place in Rome. Leading from the first turn, Davies looked strong throughout the race and touched home in a new national best of 3:45.24. “That was what we had planned to do this week,” Davies said. “I needed to work on this event to make sure I have a quicker back end for the 1,500m so this was a good test for me to see where I was at. I have only been back in the pool for a couple of months and so it was good to get that PB. “I am also really happy for my coach Kev. He has had two great swims here and I think we make a good team, he has put a lot of hard work into our training group and it is great to see it paying off.” Loughborough’s Lizzie Simmonds and Liam Tancock both qualified fastest for their respective 100m Backstroke finals with times of 1:02.47 and 54.36.
