University of Leicester
Whether or not the sun shines this summer, a series of fun events for children and adults is in store at The Richard Attenborough Centre, University of Leicester, to brighten up the season.
Events for children include the Foolhardy Folk Circus: Love makes the world go round, with top class circus acts in a traditional big top (Wednesday 27-Sunday 31 May); The Square on the Hippopotamus (Sunday 31 May), a fun-filled concert with trumpet soloist Mark Kesel and pianist Ian Westley with a host of wacky instruments; and Two Funny Blokes and a Dog, an interactive stand-up comedy from Patrick Monahan for children aged 6+ and their grown-ups.
Everyone loves a good story, and the Leicestershire Guild of Storytellers presents Tales of the Ancient Forest on Saturday 9 May, with stories from around the world for the young at heart aged 12+ years, and the compelling tale of King Arthur on Friday 26 June. Storyteller Pete Castle offers a selection of folk songs and traditional stories on Friday 15 May, with Grandad Told Me These, while Writers on the Road showcases some of the work of the Leicester Writers Club (Friday 19 June).
The ever popular monthly Sunday comedy club at The Richard Attenborough Centre continues with the surreal Liam Mullone; Rob Riley, one of the north-wests finest comedians; and the up-and-coming Midlands comic Ben Davids (19 April). They are followed, on 24 May, by Zoe Lyons, Grainne Maguire and Martin Hill; and on 14 June by Tom Price, Rosie Wilby and James Mullinger.
For art lovers, Sheila Ravnkildes specially commissioned Colour Installation will be on show from Saturday 18 April to Sunday 5 July at the Centre, and the artist will be running a workshop, Understanding Colour, on Tuesday 19 May.
An exhibition entitledThen & now: street style 89, sport style 09 (Saturday 18 July to Saturday 29 August) explores what East Midlanders were wearing in 1989 and what they wear now. There will be special opening events all day on Saturday 18 July and other events on most Saturdays throughout the exhibition period.
The highly popular summer event, Sculpture in the Garden, now in its eighth year, will return to the Universitys Botanic Garden at Oadby (Saturday 27 June Saturday 27 September). The exhibition, set in the magnificently landscaped gardens, will celebrate British sculpture in all its variety of media, scale and design.
A rolling exhibition of work from artists at The Richard Attenborough Centre will be on display throughout the summer, from 31 March to 22 June.
Classical music from local and national artists runs throughout the summer season, including a family concert on Saturday 13 June with the world renowned Coull Quartet, and a Philharmonia Orchestra Study Afternoon on Saturday 23 May, entitled City of Dreams Vienna 1900-1935.
Local and University groups performing at the Centre include the Knighton Chamber Orchestra; the University of Leicester Sinfonia; and the choral group Cantamici, offering a variety of songs from madrigals to African songs. Lunchtime Soundbites, combining lunch with light entertainment, continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12.45pm.
Jazz enthusiasts can enjoy the expressive improvisation and Blue Note influence of Hopscotch Boulevard, with special guest Corey Mwamba (Friday 3 April); The Liquorice-Stick Al-Sorts on Friday 1 May presented by Leicester Jazz House; improvisation workshops with bandleader Nick Weldon (Saturday 27 June); a concert and workshop by the Greg Abate Quartet back for a fifth year by popular demand; and a series of Jazz (and Modern Jazz) in the Piazza.
The first of three drama workshops, From Page to Stage will take place on Saturday 9 May, ideal for those interested in amateur dramatics or taking on their first directing role, while newly qualified or returning teachers of drama can enrol on the Introduction to teaching drama course, on Tuesday 14 July.
