MP Welcomes Blind Benefit Rise

Ministers have agreed to raise disability allowances for blind people, a move which will see thousands up to 1,500 a year better off.

The government will amend the welfare bill currently going through Parliament to extend the higher rate disability allowance to about 26,000 blind people.

Andy Reed from Loughborough was one of the MPs who had backed the move and campaigned on behalf of local constituents for the last 2 years.

The Loughborough MP said: "I know there was widespread support for this measure amongst Labour MPs and I have been supported locally by campaigners and of course the link to the RNIB College. I met local campaigners late last year to reinforce the message and understand their mobility needs. The case was won and not the government will find the money to make it happen. A good win for the right reasons and I am glad Minsters listened so that we did not have to rebel on the Welfare Reform Bill"
