Fun Day Is a Load of Rubbish!

Posted on 23/03/09

A FREE family fun day promises to be a load of rubbish as youngsters are encouraged to SWITCH to new ways of reducing the amount of waste thrown away.

Charnwood Borough Council is staging the event at Holy Trinity Church Hall, in Church Street, Barrow upon Soar on Friday, April 17th between 10am and 3pm.

The Easter Kids Fun Day is open to accompanied children of all ages from across the Borough and features craft workshops, story telling, games, toy and clothes swap, seed sowing and competitions.

It aims to keep youngsters entertained during the Easter holidays as well as raising awareness of waste minimisation as part of the Councils SWITCH trial Saving Waste In The Charnwood Home.

Cllr Mike Preston (Conservative councillor for Queniborough), Charnwood Borough Councils Cabinet member for Environment, said: It can often be difficult to stop children from getting bored during the school holidays but this event will be entertaining as well as getting across an important message.

Its vital that everyone does what they can to reduce the amount of rubbish that is sent to landfill sites.

By holding events such as this, we can help educate the next generation of the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling in a fun and enjoyable environment.

SWITCH is currently being trialled in an area of Loughborough, Barrow and Quorn.

A total of 1,323 homes are taking part in the year-long trial and will be monitoring how much rubbish they divert from landfill by using other methods of recycling, re-use and composting

Kath Kay, Charnwood Borough Councils Waste Policy Manager, said: While recycling is very important, we also want to encourage youngsters that some items that might have been thrown away can be re-used in creative ways.

Our aim is to try and get that message across while having a good time in the process.

Places are limited and people wanting to attend the event need to book in advance.
