Loughborough trio star in World Cup Final win
Three players from the Loughborough fold Nicky Shaw, Laura Marsh and Lydia Greenway helped Englands womens cricket team to a four-wicket win over New Zealand in the World Cup final this weekend.
27-year-old all-rounder Shaw who graduated from the University in 2007 with a degree in Criminology and Social Policy, and is now the University Centre of Cricket Excellences assistant coach was also named Player of the Match.
Shaw had not been in the England XI starting line up, but was brought in following the withdrawal of fast bowler Jenny Gunn. She got England off to a great start, taking four wickets for 34 in nine overs. Then, as New Zealand threatened Englands World Cup chances midway through the chase, Shaw hit three boundaries late on to push England past their target of 167, helping them to their first World Cup title since 1993.
Sports Science with Management student Laura Marsh also took two wickets during the match, ending up as the tournaments top wicket taker, while Lydia Greenway, a Loughborough graduate, scored 8 in the final.
The win was a fitting end to the tournament, which England dominated from start to finish, losing only one match (a dead rubber to Australia) along the way. The womens team have now won the World Cup title three times in the competitions 36-year history, eclipsing the men who are yet to taste success in the competition.
