Investing for Success

Over 100 people have booked places at a major conference on higher education courses and training, how to set them up, and the benefits that they bring for employers and businesses. The event, called Investing for Success, will take place on Monday 30 March at the Walkers Stadium and has been organised by the Institute of Lifelong Learning at the University of Leicester.

The conference is the result of research into what makes a successful foundation degree that has been conducted by the Institute of Lifelong Learning at the University of Leicester. The project began in 2007 and was funded by Foundation Degree Forward (fdf) with further support from the Learning and Skills Council. The conference itself has been supported by the Skills for Sustainable Communities Lifelong Learning Network

The study particularly looked at the role of employers in developing and running successful and effective foundation degrees. It principally involved the 21 members of the CollegesUniversity of Leicester Network (CULN) and the employers they work with.

The grant was awarded to Professor John Benyon, and the research team includes Belinda McKee, the Institutes consultant, and Katie Morris, the CULN Development Officer.

Katie Morris, CULN Development Officer, said The conference, and the research upon which it is reporting, shows the real value of the CollegesUniversity of Leicester Network and its success in bringing a variety of education providers, employers and other relevant stakeholders to work together in partnership.

Participants in the conference are coming from across the region and beyond. The main plenary speakers are Derek Longhurst, CEO at fdf, Belinda McKee, from the Leicester Institute of Lifelong Learning, and Louise Woodley, from Tesco. The day will be hosted by Sian Jones from GMTV and ITV Morning News.

The conference includes six specialist workshops on a variety of key issues including Funding, Marketing, Partnership Working, Course development, Flexible learning, and Student Support.

Professor John Benyon, Research Director in the Institute of Lifelong Learning at the University of Leicester, said: The research has revealed a lot of very useful information about the factors that lead to successful foundation degrees and how education providers and employers can work together effectively. The conference is intended to disseminate the research findings and encourage greater partnership working to improve workforce skills. The central message is that investing in appropriate higher education courses is a recipe for success.
