Exchange programme with Turkey explores Europeaness

As Turkeys application to join the European Union comes under consideration, the University of Leicester School of Education is a partner in a year-long Turkish-led student exchange programme to promote European Citizenship in the context of Turkeys potential membership.

Its aims are to develop an understanding of European citizenship and to identify the problems and challenges to education and teaching in a diverse cultural situation.

The partner universities are Leicester (England), Dokuz Eylul, Izmir (Turkey), the Middle East Technical University (METU) and the co-ordinating partner, the University of Usak (Turkey).

Dr Hugh Busher explained the value to Leicester of this exchange programme: The School of Education is working with Turkish Universities to exchange students interested in the development of European Citizenship. It is giving us a chance to carry out some research in this area that complements the Teacher Education work done on the PGCE in the School of Education for primary and secondary school teachers.

After a visit to Leicester by Turkish students at the beginning of March, our students are going to visit schools in Turkey in early April. Then, in May, several of us are attending a symposium in Turkey on European citizenship. My colleague Chris Wilkins and I will be giving seminars on research methods and building research capacity.

The group of Turkish visitors to Leicester in March included 14 students and 6 lecturers from three Universities in Turkey: the University of Usak, Dokuz Eyll University in Izmir and METU. The group included the Chancellor of Usak University, Professor Adnan Sisman, in his capacity as a Professor of Education.

A full programme of educational and cultural events included Turkish lecturers doing a Food for Thought presentation to a packed staff room; workshops by Leicester staff on citizenship issues and identity; a visit to a Sikh temple; attendance at PGCE sessions in the School of Education; and two sessions in a local Sixth From College, one with Turkish students shadowing Regent students and another where Turkish lecturers contributed to the Citizenship programme there.

In addition, there was a trip to Londons Citizenship Foundation, where the Director, Dr Tony Breslin, gave a presentation on Citizenship issues. UK colleagues also ran a focus group with Turkish students as part of the research aspect of the Project.

It was not all serious, as the organiser Dr Tony Lawson explained: Social events included a meal in Leicesters Taj Mahal, Indian Restaurant of the Year in 2005 to complement Leicesters award of University of the Year 2009! This went down well with our Turkish visitors.
