Ambitious Proposal Is on Track
Posted on 08/04/09
AMBITIOUS proposals to bridge the gap between two sections of the Great Central Railway are on track to becoming a reality.
Charnwood Borough Council has today confirmed that Atkins consultants have been appointed to carry out a feasibility study into the plan.
The study will establish whether such a scheme can create an extended railway for use by passenger and freight trains as well as for enhanced tourism and heritage use.
Charnwood commissioned the study with its partners Great Central Railway PLC and Great Central Railway (Nottingham) Ltd using a 300,000 grant from the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA).
The study will look at whether a 500-metre gap in the line at Loughborough can be joined and the Council will lead on the initiative with the Greater GCR Joint Development Group.
Cllr Stephen Hampson (Conservative councillor for Syston East), Charnwood Borough Councils Cabinet member for Regeneration, said: This is a project of regional significance with huge potential for Loughborough and the wider area.
We are very pleased to be taking the lead on this and will ensure that our colleagues in the other Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire Councils affected are fully involved.
The existing Great Central Railway is a major asset for Charnwood but this project has the potential to take its contribution to the local area and wider region to an even higher level.
The financial support from EMDA is very welcome and underlines the regional credentials of this proposal.
Atkins will start work immediately with an interim evaluation to be completed by the end of May and a final report in November.
As well as investigating the technical and financial viability of the project, they will be consulting widely with local authorities, other organisations, potential funders and business partners.
