Volunteers Needed to Help at Risk Youngsters

Posted on 08/04/09

RESIDENTS looking to make an impact on the local community are being encouraged to help change the lives of at risk youngsters.

The Charnwood Mentoring Scheme is currently recruiting volunteers to create a professional friendship with disengaged young people in the hope it can help them become active and positive citizens.

Launched as a pilot as part of a joint venture between Charnwood 20:20 and the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership, the scheme has secured the necessary funding to build on its initial achievements.

However, a recruitment drive is underway to ensure there are enough volunteers to act as Mentors to a young person in a year-long relationship.

After completing a comprehensive training programme, the mentor is matched with a mentee and will meet once a week to explore new interests and have a positive impact on their lives.

Cllr David Snartt, Charnwood Borough Councils Cabinet member for Community Safety and the Chairperson of the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership, said: The Partnership is committed to providing sustainable solutions to the problems associated with anti-social behaviour.

Charnwood 20:20s strong commitment to community cohesion will assist us to deliver alternatives to enforcement action which is, of course, of considerable benefit to the young person.

One volunteer, Esther, said: I have really enjoyed not only meeting the other mentors through the training course but also meeting up with my mentee each week and being able to have a positive impact on her life.

Its something I really look forward to each week.

Reno Xavier, the Charnwood Mentoring Scheme Co-ordinator, said: One of the most powerful things we can offer a young person is to believe in themselves, despite their mistakes.

The scheme enables young people to hear this message. We are seeing young people respond positively to the time, interest and encouragement that someone voluntarily gives.

Our current mentors come from all walks of life. Some have never worked with young people before but they are all committed to investing in young peoples lives.
