SchwBisch Hall Scholarship Up for Grabs

Posted on 14/04/09

A FANTASTIC opportunity to sample the culture of Loughboroughs twin town during a three-and-a-half-week study scholarship is up for grabs.

Charnwood Borough Councils Mayoralty Office is searching for an 18-26-year-old to take advantage of the offer from German town Schwbisch Hall to study at the Goethe Institute.

The trip takes place August 3rd to 27th and Schwbisch Hall meets the majority of costs, including course fees, board and lodgings, plus spending money for the student.

Applicants keen to take on the scholarship must be:

Aged between 18 and 26 years and able to pay for the travel to and from Schwbisch Hall

Studying or have studied German and have a basic understanding of the language

A resident or former resident of Loughborough or Charnwood or have attended a school, university or college in the Borough

Able to gain from the experience socially, vocationally and academically.

Councillor Stephen Campbell, the Mayor of Charnwood, said: This is a marvellous opportunity for a Loughborough student to develop their knowledge and enjoy the picturesque surroundings of Schwbisch Hall.

Such initiatives are an important way in which we can maintain our links with our twin towns and build friendships across the nations giving individuals, schools and other establishments the opportunity for learning about the culture, language and lifestyle of similar communities in other countries.

Im sure whoever is selected to take up the scholarship will benefit enormously from the course. It really is very generous of our twin town to make this experience possible.

I would encourage potential candidates to send in their applications early and to make sure they dont miss the deadline to apply.

Schwbisch Hall invites each of its twin towns to nominate a student for a scholarship and they are then assessed by the Institute before being offered a course suited to their ability and aspirations.

Anyone interested in being considered for the scholarship should make a written application of no more than 700 words giving precise details of how they meet the criteria and what they will gain from the trip.

The names and addresses of two referees, including a current teacher or tutor, should also be included.

A shortlist of candidates will then be drawn up and interviewed on Tuesday, 19th May by a panel comprising members of Charnwood Borough Council and the Loughborough Twinning Association.

The Goethe Institute will then contact the successful candidate to arrange course details.

Applications should be sent to the Office of the Mayor, Charnwood Borough Council, Southfields, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 2TX or emailed to mayor@charnwood.gov.uk by Friday, 24th April.

Further information about the scholarship is available by calling (Loughborough 01509) 634 783.
