Students compete in street fighter style debate at University of Leicester
Posted on 16/04/09
University of Leicester
Sixth formers from across the Midlands and North West will meet on the 24th April at the University of Leicester to decide the winner of the Central Regional Final of the Institute of Ideas and Pfizer Debating Matters Competition. The students are competing against one another to win a coveted place in the National Final, a three day residential event taking place in July. They are also in the running to win 1000 worth of books and resources for their schools from the educational publisher Hodder Education.
The Central Regional Final promises to be a thrilling day of debate for all involved. Whilst the Brunts School (Mansfield), Wath Comprehensive School (Sheffield), King Edward VI Five Ways School (Birmingham), and Kings Norton School (Birmingham) have taken part in the competition last year, Bromsgrove School (Worcester) and John Cleveland College (Leicester) are new entrants and have impressed the judges in the qualifying rounds by staving off competition from other schools in the area to reach the Regional Final. But as Tony Gilland, the competitions national coordinator remarked: Whilst some students are good at giving polished presentations, others are better at the cut and thrust of the debate- a more street-fighter approach, both can learn a lot from one another.
The Institute of Ideas and Pfizer Debating Matters Competition is renowned for being the toughest and most demanding debating competition in the country, but also the most rewarding. Sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in the Central Region, the competition aims to engage students in robust intellectual discussion on key contemporary debates in society. Melanie Knetsch, Communications Manager at the Economic and Social Research Council, said of the Research Councils support: We believe that Debating Matters encourages young people to address current issues from new angles and challenges them to think outside of their prescribed format.
Central to the aims of Debating Matters is the role played by a panel of judges. Drawn from a wide range of professional and intellectual backgrounds, judges dont just pen-push and point score, but engage students in discussion, interrogate their arguments, and provide them with frank feedback. This is certainly a daunting challenge, but as a teacher from last year remarked, Being challenged and held accountable by a group of high profile judges is a tough but invaluable learning curve
In the Central Regional Final students have some eminent judges lined up to scrutinise their arguments, including Brian Winston, Professor of Communications at the University of Lincoln and an Emmy award winning documentary script writer, Melanie Newman, deputy news editor at the TES, Dr Michele Bowring, Lecturer in Management at the University of Leicester and Ian Hammond, Chair of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service.
As the teams prepare for a day of intellectual warfare, they will all be hoping to win the ultimate prize a place in the National Final. Competing in a Regional Final is a tough but unique opportunity, and the debaters will all surely do their schools proud.
