Give nappies a real chance
Posted on 23/04/2009
Highways, Transportation & Waste Management
A new campaign is highlighting that by the time a baby is potty trained, they could have used 6,000 nappies.
By turning away from disposables and making the change to real nappies, not only will people reduce the amount of waste going to landfill but they could also save up to £700.
Running between 27th April and 3rd May, Real Nappy Week 2009 is set to be one of the best yet. To raise awareness, the Leicestershire Real Nappy Network has organised a series of events across the County, including road shows and two baby fairs.
The fairs will offer stalls, children’s activities and refreshments as well as help and advice on the County Council’s cash back and lending schemes. There will be a number of £15 vouchers available to spend on real nappy products on the day.
At the road shows, people can pick up lots of information and have a chat with a real nappy advisor.
Holly Field, Assistant Director of Waste Management for the County Council, said: "Around 50 million disposable nappies are thrown away in Leicestershire each year. Most of these end up in landfill sites and can take hundreds of years to decompose.
"If enough residents start using real nappies, it would mean a cut in the amount of waste being sent to landfill and help to improve our environment.”
Eye-catching images are currently featured on two specially-decorated taxis to help spread the word about real nappies across Leicestershire.
