University of Leicester seeks business leaders and professionals to judge postgraduate work
Posted on 23/04/09
University of Leicester
An appeal is going out to regional business leaders and professionals to act as judges at an event aimed at showcasing the best of postgraduate student research at the University of Leicester.
The University, ranked in the top 10 for research impact in England, is planning to stage a festival demonstrating exciting and innovative postgraduate research to businesses and members of the public.
The Festival of Postgraduate Research on 25 June introduces employers to the next generation of innovators and cutting-edge researchers, and gives postgraduate researchers the opportunity to explain the real world implications of their research to a wide ranging audience.
The University is seeking regional professionals and business representatives to act as judges at the Festival. Judges will be required to assess the poster presentations given by researchers from disciplines across the University including the biological sciences, business, science, engineering, education, social science and the arts.
Andrew Frain from the Universitys Employer Liaison team said: "Volunteering to act as a judge at the Festival represents a time commitment of around 4 hours from 9.15am onwards. No academic background or specialist knowledge is required to take part, and full briefing and judging criteria will be provided on the day.
"A complimentary lunch is included during which you will have the opportunity to speak to researchers and senior University staff. We find that the interaction with business people and professionals gives the postgraduate students a real boost and the judges see at first hand the emerging talent from a leading research university.
The Festival of Postgraduate Research aims:
to provide an opportunity for research postgraduates to develop their presentation, communication and networking skills.
to develop research postgraduates' ability to convey their research effectively to non-specialist audiences.
to encourage research postgraduates to consider the real-world implications of their research.
to showcase the current research being undertaken by the University of Leicester's research postgraduates to employers and the general public.
to make the case for the employability of PhDs within the job marketplace.
Anyone interested in being a judge at this year's Festival of Postgraduate Research, or simply interested in attending can find further details of this year's event at www.le.ac.uk/gradschool/festival or register interest by emailing employerlink@le.ac.uk or contact Andrew Frain Tel: 0116 252 5117
