Local school children begin work on the ‘People’s Painting’
Children from Thorpe Acre Primary School have today (24 April) put the first brush strokes to a piece of artwork to celebrate Loughborough University’s Centenary.
The pupils painted the first five-feet-long section of a mural depicting iconic imagery of both the town and University. Among the things represented in the first panel are the bell foundry, a steam train, deer from Bradgate Park and an athlete.
The part-painted artwork will be one of the features at the University’s forthcoming Centenary Open Day, which is being held on the Loughborough campus on Sunday 14 June. Visitors to the event will be invited to add their artistic contributions on the day to complete the remaining five panels of the ‘People’s Painting’.
Before starting work on the painting, the Thorpe Acre pupils learned how to make their own paint as part of the ‘Creating a Colourful Life’ project, which aims to teach young people about the science of colour. They then used they own creations to paint the artwork.
Dr Sandie Dann, from the University’s Department of Chemistry, leads the ‘Creating a Colourful Life’ project at Loughborough. “The pupils at Thorpe Acre have made a terrific start to the painting today. They really enjoyed creating their own paints and then using them,” she said.
“The artwork will be a fantastic ‘work in progress’ exhibit at the Open Day. I hope the children’s work today will inspire other budding artists to pick up their brushes and turn the ‘People’s Painting’ into a real community masterpiece!”
The Open Day is one of a range of events being held throughout 2009 to celebrate Loughborough’s Centenary – one hundred years since the establishment of Loughborough Technical Institute, the University’s predecessor. From 12 noon onwards there will be a wide variety of hands-on activities and interactive displays, practical advice on a range of topics, a chance to try out the University’s outstanding sports facilities, a ‘fun area’ with a petting zoo and face painting, and much more. Further details of the Open Day programme and all the other Centenary events are available at www.lboro.ac.uk/centenary.
