Leading neuroscientist to speak at University of Leicester
Posted on 27/04/09
University of Leicester
The renowned cognitive neuroscientist, Professor Trevor W. Robbins FRS, is to speak on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and drug addiction at the annual Sluckin Lecture at the University of Leicester.
Professor Robbins, whose talk is entitled From Impulsivity To Compulsivity: Neural Endophenotypes Of Neuropsychiatric Disorder, holds the Chair of Experimental Psychology at University of Cambridge.
His lecture will consider the relationship of the behavioural traits of impulsivity and compulsivity, and their neural basis relevant to neuropsychiatric disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and drug addiction.
Impulsive behaviour is characterised by hasty, unreflective decisions that are over-influenced by immediate small rewards, whereas compulsive behavior is a predisposition to perform habitual, ritualistic actions to relieve anxiety. In both cases, the behaviour persists despite adverse consequences.
Professor Robbins will point to evidence that shows how impulsivity predicts vulnerability to cocaine addiction, and will help to resolve the relationship between impulsivity and drug abuse in humans.
Whilst the construct of impulsivity itself has been fractionated into several distinct parts using cognitive and neuropsychopharmacological approaches, there are commonalities relevant to the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD with drugs such as Ritalin.
A similar analysis can be applied to the concept of compulsivity, which is relevant to both OCD and addiction.
Professor Robbins will put forward the hypothesis that impulsivity and compulsivity depend on different neuroanatomical loops of the prefrontal cortex and striatum, modulated by chemical neurotransmitters including dopamine and serotonin, and will consider theoretical and clinical implications of this scheme.
Dr Raphael Gillett, who is organizing the lecture, commented: The Annual Sluckin Lecture was inaugurated in 1991 in honour of our highly respected and much loved former colleague, Wladek Sluckin (1919-1985), who was Professor of Psychology at University of Leicester from 1965 to 1984. Wladeks principal research interest was animal behaviour.
Speakers who have delivered the Sluckin Lecture in previous years include: Anthony Dickinson, Aubrey Manning, Colin Blakemore, Nick Chater, Jeffrey Gray, Richard Gregory, Pat Bateson, Colwyn Trevarthen, Pat Rabbitt, Robert Hinde, Margaret Boden, Rufus Johnstone, Adrian Furnham, and John Sloboda.
More details about the 2009 Sluckin Lecture can be found on the website: http://www.le.ac.uk/pc/rtg/school/sluckin2009.html
Professor Robbins talk, From Impulsivity To Compulsivity: Neural Endophenotypes Of Neuropsychiatric Disorder, will take place in the Frank and Katherine May Lecture Theatre in the Henry Wellcome Building, University of Leicester, Lancaster Road, on Thursday 14th May at 4.30pm.
The lecture is open to the public and is free of charge.
