Listen to Snibston's stories on new tour
Posted on 30/04/2009
Community Services
The stories of Snibston will come to life in a new audio tour at Leicestershire’s Discovery Museum.
Visitors will be able to listen to tales of the old Snibston colliery, life in Coalville and the creation of Snibston Discovery Museum.
Leicestershire County Council, which runs the museum, commissioned Leicester-based artists Watch This Space to produce the tracks.
Snibston’s curator, Carolyn Abel, said: “The tour will highlight the events and people that helped shape the area, through anecdotes and forgotten heritage.”
Visitors will be able to borrow an audio player and listen to nine tracks, as they make their way around the museum and the country park and nature reserve outside.
Topics include:
- The birth of Coalville
- Mining memories
- Miners’ pastimes
- Snibston today
The audio tour will be launched at 2.30pm on Thursday, April 30 at the Discovery Museum.
For media interviews, please contact the press office on 0116 305 7046.
Background:
The tour was funded by Renaissance East Midlands and Leicestershire County Council. Renaissance East Midlands provides support for museums to attract more visitors, work with schools and community groups and make the most of their collections and staff.
To use the free audio tour, visitors can borrow an audio player from Snibston’s reception and then follow the map on the tour leaflet.
