Detectives are appealing for witnesses after an aggravated burglary last night.

The incident happened at around 10pm in Clematis Close, Beaumont Leys when the elderly occupants, who are both in their 80s, answered their door to two men.

The suspects pushed their way into the property and assaulted the victims, before threatening them with an axe.

A search of the property was carried out by the two suspects and numerous items of jewellery were taken, including watches, chains and bracelets, as well as cash, a mobile phone and a laptop.

The suspects left the property at around 10.45pm in the victims' vehicle, a blue Renault Modus. The car was later found nearby and has been recovered by police.

The first suspect is described as white, slim, around 5'5"tall and between 35 and 40-years-old. He had light brown hair, possibly a moustache and a round face and was wearing a light coloured jacket and trousers. He was carrying the weapon.

The second suspect is described as white, slim, around 5'9"tall and in his 20s with black hair, stubble and a thin face. He was wearing a dark duffle type coat and black trousers.

Detective constable George Fraser, who is investigating the incident said: "This is a particularly nasty incident which has left the victims incredibly shaken and frightened.

"The vehicle was found in Bluegates Road a short while after the incident and we would like to speak to anyone who saw the vehicle being abandoned or anyone running from the area.

"We would also ask people to think back to last night and see if they remember witnessing anything suspicious at all. Maybe you saw two men knocking at a door in Clematis Close? It may have seemed perfectly innocent at the time but could now prove vital to our enquiry.

"We would urge anyone who was in the area between 10pm and 10.45pm last night and thinks they may have any information at all to contact us."

Inspector Pete Wells, commander of Beaumont Leys local policing unit, said: "This is an unusual offence for the area and is understandably distressing for the victims and the community as a whole.

"I would like to take this opportunity to stress to residents the importance of simple crime prevention measures, such as not answering your door to strangers, especially ones calling late at night.

"The neighbourhood team will be carrying out extra patrols in the area to reassure residents. Please stop and speak to them if you require any crime prevention advice or call Beaumont Leys police station where officers will be happy to help."
