police, constabulary, leicestershire police Warning following rise in burglaries in North Harborough area

Officers from Harborough local policing unit are urging residents to shut their windows every time they leave home following a spate of burglaries in the North area of the District.

In the last two months a total of 20 burglaries have been reported, mainly in the Great Glen, Houghton on the Hill, Billesdon and Kibworth area.

In most cases the homes have been entered by insecure windows or doors.

PC Claire Murray, of Harborough local policing unit, said: "It is very disappointing as so many of these burglaries could have been prevented. Many burglars are simply opportunist thieves who see an open window or door and take a chance.

"I appreciate that in the warmer weather people leave windows open. However I would urge residents to make sure that all doors and windows are secure every time they leave their homes. Even if you are in the garden enjoying the weather, please make sure that your ground floor windows are shut. It can take just a few seconds for a thief to gain access and steal your valuables.

"I would also ask members of the community to remain vigilant and help police by reporting any suspicious activity immediately."

Officers will be carrying out high visibility patrols in vulnerable areas, as well as advising residents about crime prevention measures.
