Girl guides going back to their roots

A project to improve the environment around Forest Road in Loughborough has enlisted the help of a former Girl Guide.

Olive McBride helped plant trees in the area back in 1932, along with her fellow guides from Loughborough. The original trees celebrated the guide’s 21st anniversary.

On Saturday (28th April), Mrs McBride helped present-day Loughborough Girl Guides and a team from the County Council plant a cherry tree (picture attached).

The tree planting is part of a County Council spruce-up of the area which is nearing completion.

This has involved replacing a worn-out footway with a new verge and shrubs, enhancing the plants in the central reservation, introducing new trees and a brand new fence to completely transform this gateway into Loughborough.

Later this year, the Guides from across Loughborough will be planting bulbs in the new verges around the brook on Forest Road to commemorate their centenary in 2010.

A County Council spokesperson, said: ”We are delighted we were able to find Mrs McBride and involve her in planting the new cherry tree.

"The re-vamp demonstrates the County Council’s continued commitment and investment to improve the environment and landscape of Loughborough.

"The project is also part of the support for the East Midlands in Bloom entry being put together across the town by the County and Borough Councils, the Loughborough Echo, the University, College and local businesses.

"The spruce-up will not only improve this area of Loughborough but also helps kick-start the Guides' centenary celebrations.”
