'Take a Step Back in Time' at Earl Shilton library

Do you want to find out more about the local history of Earl Shilton and Barwell? If so, why not come along to a free event at Earl Shilton library on Tuesday, 12 May.

All members of the community are invited to attend the drop-in session from 1.00-3.00 pm, where local history experts will display a photographic archive of the area. There will also be an opportunity to scan your own old photographs using the computing and scanning facilities at the library. Help will be at hand from our experts along with a selection of local history books to borrow.

From 2.00-3.00 pm, Earl Shilton Local History Society will give a talk entitled: ‘The Local Boot and Shoe Industry’, with samples of the shoes from the era on display. This talk has previously proved very popular and booking is therefore essential. To book your free place, please call Earl Shilton library on: 0116 3058392.

Background notes

Libraries across Leicestershire have started to see the benefits of the £5 million transformation programme and other initiatives recently introduced as they buck the national trend and see book issues increasing. Latest improvements include:

  • Fifty libraries across Leicestershire open all day Saturday, with Loughborough library piloting Sunday opening
  • A big increase in new stock with a huge boost in best seller titles shedding the myth that the books libraries have are dusty and out of date
  • Popular events and activities including wriggly readers (rhyme and story time for 0-4 year olds), internet taster sessions and family learning activities
  • Online developments including improved renewal services, catalogue search facilities and 24-7 access to a librarian. Look out for ongoing developments at www.leics.gov.uk/libraries

The improvements are part of the County Council's priorities for the next 4 years.
