With lighter mornings and warmer weather setting in, people are being urged to give their gardens some tender, loving care.

Composting is a great way to turn waste into a nutritious substance for plants, flowers and home-grown vegetables and next week, roadshows will be spreading the message across Leicestershire.

Compost Awareness Week runs from Monday (4th May) until Sunday 10th and as in previous years, the Leicestershire Waste Partnership will be providing help and practical tips at events and roadshows.

However this year, officers will not be alone but accompanied by an ‘army’ of dedicated 'master composter' volunteers. These are trained residents who use their skills and enthusiasm to encourage more people to get involved in composting and help with any queries.

Holly Field, the County Council's Assistant Director of Waste Management, said: "Home-composting is a brilliant way of turning an otherwise waste product into a resource to use at home.

"This waste would otherwise end up in landfill making home composting a perfect example of how we can reduce waste and make the most of our resources."
