Composting in the community

Communities are being encouraged to think about cutting the amount of waste sent to landfill by taking part in a novel project.

'Community composting' is a clever way of enabling people in a block of flats, an allotment society or a local group to collectively compost their garden waste.

Projects can vary in size ranging from a small amount of shared compost bins to large scale set-ups.

Leicestershire Waste Partnership is seeking to support a small number of pilot projects across the county and is inviting anyone who is interested in finding out more to a free seminar.

At the event, people can learn about the idea, ask any questions and hear from experienced community composters about what is involved in setting up and running such a project, the types of community composting projects running and legal requirements.

The seminar is taking place between 10am and 4pm on Thursday, 14th May at NSPCC National Training Centre in Beaumont Leys, Leicester.

Holly Field, the County Council’s Assistant Director for Waste Management said  "Community Composting provides a wonderful opportunity for people to come together and turn their garden waste into a useful resource which they can use in their community”.
