Police looking for 'special' people in Rutland
A recruiting seminar is being held at Oakham police station for people interested in joining the Special Constabulary.
It is being held on Wednesday 13th May between 6.30pm and 8.30pm at the police station on Station Road in the town.
The police recruiting team and Special Constables will be there to give first hand information about being a special. They will talk about the role of the volunteer constable, the training involved, and their duties and responsibilities.
Special officers come from all walks of life and volunteer to undertake policing duties alongside regular officers. They develop skills that are transferable and are highly valued by employers. They are asked to volunteer a minimum of 4 hours a week.
Special Officer 5181 Adam Lowe became a Special in Rutland four years ago, having served as a Special Constable for 3 years in another county. He has dealt with road traffic accidents, domestic disputes, public order, helped with the investigation of burglaries by taking part in door to door enquiries and statement taking. He has also undertaken traffic control work and high profile policing at community events.
He said; “I really enjoy being a special officer in Rutland. It is a great feeling to be able to make the community I live in a safer place. It is very rewarding because the police train you well and then give you the opportunity to put that training into use and therefore make a difference to the community you serve.”
“I choose to work 8 hours a week but you only have to commit to 4 hours a week. I am able to fit it in around my full time job because the police enable you to fit your police work around your home and work life and not the other way around.”
There are currently three Special Police Constables working from Oakham police station.
Special Constables have exactly the same powers as Regular Officers and are issued with the same equipment. For this reason applicants are required to have certain standards of medical and physical fitness. A detailed information pack and application forms can be obtained by contacting the Special Constable’s Recruitment Team on 0116 222 2222 ext 2062 or log on to www.leics.police.uk/careers.
