Switch Trial Set to Be Expanded

Posted on 11/05/09

Switch TrialA GREEN initiative that encourages residents to switch to new ways of recycling has proved to be so popular it is to be expanded to more homes.

The SWITCH Saving Waste In The Charnwood Home trial was initially piloted in 1,300 properties in parts of Barrow, Quorn and a small area of Loughborough.

But following a survey of residents who have taken part, plans are being drawn up to extend it to more homes in the Borough.

The exact locations are still to be agreed but will be announced when finalised.

Kath Kay, Charnwoods Waste Policy Manager, said: The SWITCH trial has proved to be very popular with the residents taking part.

Residents have been very keen to trial the free equipment and we have received very positive and useful feedback from questionnaires and surveys.

We are now looking to extend the trial to other parts of the Borough and will be announcing details of these in the near future when everything is in place.

The SWITCH initiative encourages people to divert potentially environmentally damaging garden and food waste away from landfill by using alternative recycling methods.

So far, the Council has handed out 72 home composters, 68 Bokashi kits, 27 Green Cones and 49 wormeries free of charge to those people taking part in the trial.

SWITCH has also made people more aware of the importance of recycling, reuse and waste minimisation.

One Charnwood resident said: A year ago, we sometimes struggled to cram all our rubbish into the wheelie bin and get the lid closed.

Now though, our wheelie bin is usually less than 50% full without compacting anything. The home composter has been a significant part of the process.

As part of the survey, Loughborough resident Janet McKenzie won a Duo recycling bin after her name was first drawn at random of all completed questionnaires.

She now has an attractive slimline plastic bin with easy to use separate storage compartments and said the SWITCH trial has helped her reduce the amount of waste she sends to landfill.

Mrs McKenzie added: I wanted to up the stakes and be more proactive with my recycling.

Kath added: Congratulations to Mrs McKenzie. Her feedback was invaluable in helping Charnwood Borough Council make this trial a success.
