Police name man killed in road traffic collision in Birstall
Police have named the man killed in a fatal road traffic collision in Birstall.
The incident happened at 2.17am on Monday May 11, 2009 on Greengate Lane when a blue Peugeot 206 left the road and was in collision with a fence.
19-year-old, Mr David James Freeland, of no fixed abode,received fatal injuries.
An 18-year-old man was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary with serious injuries andsincebeen discharged.
Four men, two aged 18, one aged 19and one aged 20,who have beenarrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving have been released on police bail pending further enquries.
The road was closed from its junction with Woodgate Drive and the A6 Loughborough Road to allow officers to deal with the incident and examine the scene.
Just prior to the collision, the vehicle had failed to stop for a police patrol car although it was not pursuing the vehicle at the time of the collision. The matter was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and they have agreed that they will have no further involvement in the investigation.
Detective Sergeant Ivan Stafford, who is leading the investigation, said: We urgently need to speak to anyone who has any information either about the collision or the circumstances leading up to it.
The Peugeot was travelling towards Thurcaston before the collision so if you saw the vehicle in the area, then we would ask you to contact us.
Any information no small it may seem could be vital to our investigation.
Anyone with any information about the collision is asked to contact DC 1852 Robert Lapworth on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 1852. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
