Be prepared to meet Giant Millipedes, Giant Snails, Giant Leaf Mimicking Insects, Giant Red Legged Tarantulas, Giant Toads – and a very large snake! On Wednesday 27 May the ‘Animals in Hands’ team will be visiting Charnwood Museum with their Jungle Giants workshops.
Charnwood Museum is continuing it’s tradition of offering local youngsters the opportunity to get up close and personal with live exotic animals with a series of new workshops in the May half term holidays.
In these workshops visitors will meet and handle animals that are a lot bigger than the day to day creatures found in your back garden. Visitors will discover how big insects, toads, spiders and snakes can grow in a warm, wet climate and how they adapt their movements and feeding habits to survive in the jungle.
These workshops, and many other activities at Charnwood Museum over the summer, are being offered as part of Leicestershire’s new Discover Like Darwin programme. This is a new activity programme to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of scientist Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his landmark book On the Origin of Species. The programme aims to raise awareness of the natural world through activities that inspire scientific exploration and observation of the environment and wildlife, whilst having fun! Look out for events with the Discover Like Darwin logo. Visit www.leics.gov.uk/darwin for further details.
Jungle Giants workshops cost £2 per person. Workshops will be held at 10.15am-11.00am, 11.15am-12.00pm, 12.15pm-1.00pm, 1.30pm-2.15pm, 2.30pm-3.15pm and 3.30pm-4.15pm on Wednesday 27 May. Workshops are aimed at visitors aged 3 and above. Children should bring an appropriate adult with them. Tickets must be booked and paid for in advance by calling Charnwood Museum on 01509 233754 or visiting the museum in Queens Park in Loughborough.
For a full programme of events and exhibitions at Charnwood Museum visit www.leics.gov.uk/charnwoodmuseum or pick up a leaflet from the museum.
Charnwood Museum is a partnership between Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council.
