Fabulous Festival of local archaeology

Over the last few years there have been some fabulous local archaeological discoveries. These include the Hallaton Treasure and the exciting finds in advance of the Highcross Shopping Centre in Leicester. From July 18th to August 2nd there will be a chance to find out about these and other aspects of local archaeology with over 40 events around Leicestershire and Rutland.

The Festival of Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology builds on the past success of Leicestershire Archaeology Week. There will be major events at museums including Jewry Wall Museum, Donington le Heath Manor House, Rutland County Museum, the Old Rectory at Loughborough and Ashby Museum which will concentrate on different periods and aspects of the past, but on top of this there will be smaller events and demonstrations around the county organised by local archaeological groups at, for instance, Hallaton, Swannington and Great Bowden. There will also be talks at places such as Donington, Hinckley and Great Easton. A feature of this year's festival are the guided walks including all the county's prehistoric hillforts at Burrough Hill, Breedon Hill, Ratby Bury, and Beacon Hill, as well as other key sites such as Grace Dieu medieval priory, Newhouse Grange at Sheepy, Market Harborough, Papillon Hall near Lubenham, Belton village and Hallaton village and Castle.

Paul Bowman, Chairman of the Leicestershire Museums Archaeological Fieldwork Group, commented “This is a fantastic programme with something for everyone across the fortnight of activities. This has only been possible with the tremendous support from local museums and societies. We are confident that this will break all records and, we hope, will encourage more people to get involved in local archaeological groups. Full details of the Festival programme can be obtained in leaflet form from museums, libraries and Tourist Information Centres or online at www.leics.gov.uk/archaeologyfestival."

The Festival of Leicestershire and Rutland Archaeology (part of the Festival of British Archaeology) is co-ordinated by Leicestershire county Museums Service and runs from July 18th to August 2nd at venues across the 2 counties.
