Loughborough MP delighted by new Government policy for Gurkhas

Andy Reed, MP for Loughborough is delighted by todays announcement of the new government policy for Gurkhas, which will allow all Gurkhas who served prior to 1 July 1997 and completed four years service to apply to settle in the UK with their spouses and dependent children. Gurkhas who retired after 1 July 1997 are already eligible to apply for settlement under the current immigration rules.
Andy Reed was one of only 27 Labour MPs who voted against the government when the issue arose in the House of Commons on 29 April, and is delighted that they have now changed their position to allow the Gurkhas to settle here.
Andy says, Im very proud that this Government is the first and only government since the Second World War to provide UK settlement rights for Gurkhas. In 2004, Labour brought in rules which for the first time allowed Gurkhas to apply to stay permanently in the UK. Since then, 6,000 Gurkhas and their families have settled in the UK. Im delighted that with these new rules even more Gurkhas who served our country so well will be allowed to settle here.
The government had come forward with a very technically sound plan - but it failed to address the morality of the debt we owe the Gurkhas. So I am delighted that today they have been big enough to come back and follow the will of the House. This is a good day for the Gurkhas and a good day for parliament.
