A 28-year-old man has today been sentenced to a total of eight years for firearms offences.

Imran Khalifa, of Evington Drive was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court after pleading guilty to possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.

This was following an incident, when Khalifa was stopped, by police on Saturday, December 13, 2008 on New Ashby Road, Loughborough.

Firearms officers searched his vehicle and found a semi-automatic pistol under the front passenger seat and ammunition. A small knife and a quantity of cannabis were also recovered.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Redfern, of Leicestershire Constabulary, said: “I hope this reassures members of the public that a prohibited firearm is off the streets and the person who possessed it is now serving a prison sentence.

"Leicestershire Constabulary has a comprehensive strategy in place to prevent and detect offences involving firearms.

“I hope this investigation sends out a strong message to other criminals that we take these kinds of offences seriously and we will do everything we can to put you before the courts.”
