Appeal for witnesses following fire in Beaumont Leys
Police are appealing for witnesses following a car fire in Beaumont Leys in the early hours of this morning (Saturday May 23).
The car subsequently rolled into a nearby house in Scalpay Close and the fire spread to the front of the property. Three occupants in the house required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation but have since been discharged from hospital.
Police were called to the incident at 3.45am by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service. An investigation is now underway into the incident, in conjunction with the Fire Service.
Detective Constable Damian Young said: “Clearly this incident could have had more serious consequences. Fortunately the three occupants of the house only suffered smoke inhalation and have now been discharged from hospital following treatment.
“The fire is being treated as suspicious and an investigation is underway, although it is in its early stages. We are appealing to anyone who may have seen something suspicious in the area of Scalpay Close in the early hours of this morning, or has any information about this incident, to please get in touch with police.
“A forensic examination has taken place and officers are viewing CCTV in the area to try to establish the circumstances leading up to the fire. Local officers are also carrying out house to house enquiries.”
Anyone with information is asked to call DC 1262 Damian Young at Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for an officer and when prompted key in the officer’s identification number 1262. Alternatively call Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
